The fort complex consists of an Upper Fort and Lower Fort, with massive fortifications, watchtowers, temples and royal structures. The lower complex is particularly known for the magnificent Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism material describes Chandragiri as the last capital of the Vijayanagara kings, highlighting its importance in the later history of the empire. 👑 SRI KRISHNADEVARAYA & CHANDRAGIRI Chandragiri has a special connection with Sri Krishnadevaraya, the celebrated Vijayanagara emperor. Historical and tourism sources record that Krishnadevaraya stayed at Chandragiri during pilgrimages to Tirumala. The fort therefore isn’t simply an old monument — it forms part of the historical landscape surrounding the Vijayanagara rulers and their connection with Tirumala. 🏰 RAJA MAHAL One of the most impressive structures inside the fort is the three-storeyed Raja Mahal. Today, it houses an archaeological museum containing historical artefacts including sculptures, weapons, coins and other objects connected with the region’s past. 👸 RANI MAHAL The beautiful Rani Mahal, seen in this video, is another important structure within the fort complex. Its ornate arches, decorative windows and intricate architectural details give us a glimpse into the artistic traditions of the Vijayanagara period. 🏛️ A FORT THAT WITNESSED CENTURIES Chandragiri’s story goes far beyond one king or one dynasty. The site has roots going back many centuries and was later strengthened and developed under Vijayanagara rule. It subsequently witnessed major political changes in South Indian history.
