Learn how the 12-bar blues actually works on lap steel guitar. In this lesson, I break down the basic structure of the blues using the Nashville Number System, so you can understand the progression instead of simply memorizing a set of chords.
We’ll look at how the I, IV, and V chords create the foundation of a traditional 12-bar blues, how the progression moves from bar to bar, and how the turnaround brings everything back to the beginning. Then we’ll put those concepts onto the lap steel and start making the progression sound like music.
The goal here isn’t just to teach you one blues progression. It’s to give you a framework you can use to jam with other musicians, follow blues songs by ear, change keys easily, and understand what’s happening harmonically.
If you’re learning lap steel guitar in Open D tuning, this is a great foundation for improvising, accompanying other musicians, and building your blues vocabulary.
