Desperadoes Steel Orchestra at Steelpan and Powder 2026 at Queen’s Park Savannah Steelpan & Powder Parade in Port of Spain 2026 Brief history of Steelpan and Powder. Steelpan originated in Trinidad in the early 20th century, evolving from the use of bamboo instruments called tamboo bamboo. After the ban on skin drums in the 1930s, innovators in Port of Spain began experimenting with metal containers, eventually creating the steel drum, now called the steel pan. By the 1940s, tuned steel pans capable of playing melodies became central to Carnival and Trinidadian culture. Powder parades are tied to J’Ouvert, the early-morning Carnival street celebration in Port of Spain. Participants traditionally smear themselves and others with colored powders, mud, or paint, a practice tracing back to Canboulay and emancipation celebrations in the 1800s. These powder rituals symbolize freedom, rebellion, and the spirit of release that marks the start of Carnival Monday. Both steel pan and powder parades are now integral to Trinidad’s Carnival identity, blending African, Creole, and local traditions into the modern festivities.
