The complete story of the Vikings — from the first raid on Lindisfarne in 793 to the last Norse king falling at Stamford Bridge in 1066 — a calm, nearly 3-hour history documentary to help you fall asleep.
🕯️ Tonight, let me take you gently north, to a cold and beautiful country where the mountains fall straight into black water and the winter night lasts so long that the sun becomes a rumour — and let me tell you the whole story of the people who came out of it. For nearly three hundred years they were the terror of Europe, and also its merchants, its settlers, its explorers, and at the last its kings. They built a ship unlike anything else afloat, and with it they went everywhere.
Let me carry you slowly through the whole long story, from its very beginning to its very end. The fjords and the long winters and the hunger for land that sent them out; the extraordinary ship, keel and sail and riveted oak, that made all of it possible; the summer morning at Lindisfarne that terrified Christendom; the gods of the north — one-eyed Odin on the world-tree, red-bearded Thor, and a world already fated to end; the raiding years and the rivers of Frankia; Dublin and the sea-kings of Ireland; the Great Heathen Army and Alfred hiding in the marshes of Somerset; the longhouse, the law, and the open-air assembly; Iceland, settled by men who wanted no king at all; Erik the Red and Greenland; Vinland, and houses built in America five centuries before Columbus; the river road east to Kyiv and the Great City of Constantinople; the silver, the ship burials, Normandy, Cnut and his North Sea empire; the coming of the White Christ; and the quiet end.
From a burning monastery on an English beach to an empty moonlit sea with nothing at all on the water, let the whole story of the Vikings unfold gently in the dark, as you drift off to sleep.
So dim the lights. Close your eyes. And let the old northern sea rock you gently, as you fall asleep.
🕯️ Nearly three hours of calm narration and soft ambient sound — perfect for falling asleep, relaxing, studying, or long peaceful listening. No loud noises, no jump scares.
