On November 30, 2021, Barbados removed Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and became a republic after 55 years of independence. Here is the story of how a small island of fewer than 300,000 people challenged the British Crown. Barbados was one of the first British colonies built on sugar and enslaved labour. In 2021, Prime Minister Mia Mottley led the country to cut its last colonial link: Dame Sandra Mason became the first President, and Prince Charles attended the midnight ceremony in Bridgetown. In this video, we look at why Barbados made this choice, what happened that night, how the reparations debate with Britain has continued since, and what it means for the Caribbean and Africa. Watch until the end: the final part explains why this small island now speaks with a loud voice on the world stage. Was Barbados right to remove the Queen? Yes or no? Tell us in the comments, and tell us where you’re watching from. This video is for information and commentary. The transition to a republic was approved by the Barbadian Parliament and took place with the Crown’s representatives present. Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022.
