Penicillin Wasn't Discovered the Way You Were Taught

Penicillin's discovery was an accident. Its creation was anything but. Alexander Fleming's 1928 observation was real, and it mattered. But for roughly a decade, penicillin stayed a laboratory curiosity: unstable, difficult to purify and almost impossible to make in useful quantities. This is the story of the Oxford team that took another look, the improvised factory they built, the patient they could not save, a mouldy cantaloupe in Peoria, and the wartime industry that turned one contaminated plate into medicine.
