Coastal Erosion Model

This hands-on classroom investigation explores how coastal erosion shapes shorelines and how different coastal protection methods can reduce erosion. Using sand to model a coastline and water to simulate wave action, students observe how waves erode and reshape the coast. They then investigate and compare different coastal protection strategies, such as: • Nature-based solutions (e.g., mangroves) • Coastal protection structures (e.g., armourstone) • Traditional hard engineering (e.g., seawalls) By observing changes to their model coastline, students explore how engineering solutions can help protect coastal environments, infrastructure and communities from erosion.
