💥 CITIES UNDER BOMBARDMENT — How has warfare changed the way cities are attacked?
From the opening months of World War I to conflicts of the 21st century, this visualization follows recorded campaigns in which cities came under bombardment.
The timeline begins in 1914, when cities such as Antwerp, Paris and Belgrade became early examples of modern warfare reaching directly into urban areas. Over the following century, bombing and bombardment would transform the experience of war for civilians, with increasingly powerful aircraft, artillery, missiles and other weapons bringing destruction to cities far from conventional front lines.
🌍 This visualization maps each recorded city-campaign one at a time, showing where the campaign occurred, when it began, who carried it out, and the historical context surrounding it.
📍 THE MAP SHOWS
• The city under bombardment
• The year the campaign began
• The attacker or attacking force
• The campaign associated with the city
• Available information on civilian deaths
• Historical context for the attack
• The changing geographic spread of urban bombardment
⏳ FROM 1914 TO 2026
The timeline covers more than a century of conflict:
🇧🇪 World War I and the bombardment of Belgian cities
🇫🇷 The bombardment of Paris and other European cities
🇷🇸 The attacks on Belgrade during the First World War
🇬🇧 The Zeppelin and aircraft raids against British cities
🇩🇪 The bombing of German cities during the World Wars
🌏 The expansion of aerial warfare during the interwar period
💣 The enormous urban bombing campaigns of World War II
🇰🇷 The Korean War and large-scale attacks on cities
🇻🇳 The Vietnam War and prolonged aerial campaigns
🌍 Conflicts across the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe
🚀 The transition from conventional bombing toward increasingly precise missile and air-strike campaigns in modern warfare
The history of urban bombardment is also a history of technological change. In 1914, early airships and aircraft could carry only relatively small bomb loads and struggled with navigation and accuracy. Within decades, strategic bombers could carry vastly greater destructive power over long distances.
📊 WHY THIS MATTERS
Looking at individual conflicts in isolation can make the history of bombardment difficult to understand. A timeline provides a different perspective.
It shows how attacks on cities evolved from relatively limited early raids into large-scale campaigns involving hundreds or thousands of aircraft, and later into missile and precision-strike warfare.
It also shows how the geographic reach of war changed.
In earlier conflicts, civilians could often perceive the battlefield as something physically distant from their homes. Modern air power changed that relationship. Once aircraft could cross borders and strike urban centres, the distinction between the front line and the home front became increasingly blurred.
The First World War was an important turning point. Historical research on World War I describes how cities including Antwerp, Belgrade and Paris experienced bombardment, while Zeppelin and aircraft raids brought the effects of the war directly to civilians. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
The bombing of cities subsequently became a major feature of 20th-century warfare. The technology, scale and strategic objectives changed dramatically, but the fundamental consequence remained the same: war increasingly reached densely populated urban areas.
⚠️ ABOUT THE DATA
This visualization follows the recorded city-campaign dataset represented in the chart. “Recorded” does not mean that every historical bombardment or every incident is necessarily included.
Historical records are incomplete, especially for conflicts where documentation was destroyed, disputed or never systematically collected.
Civilian death figures should therefore be treated carefully. Some campaigns have relatively well-documented casualty figures, while others have estimates that vary substantially between historical sources.
The absence of a recorded civilian death figure does not mean that civilians were unharmed. In some cases, reliable city-level casualty estimates are simply unavailable.
The visualization also focuses on city-level bombardment campaigns rather than attempting to measure every artillery exchange, battlefield attack, airstrike, missile launch or military engagement.
