Mito Koudoukan is a domain school created in the Mito Domain in the late Edo period in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture.
It was founded in 1841 by Nariaki Tokugawa, the ninth lord of the Mito domain, in the San-no-Maru area of Mito Castle.
The grounds are planted with 800 plum trees of about 60 varieties, and together with Kairakuen Garden, it is a famous plum blossom viewing spot.
The school functioned as an educational institution to train the samurai in a wide range of studies, including Confucian and Japanese studies, martial arts, medicine, astronomy, and Dutch studies, in order to cultivate both literary and military skills.
The 15th Tokugawa Shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, was educated at Kodokan from the age of five.
Mito Gak” developed at the Koudokan, and its ideas influenced many of the late Bakumatsu patriots, including Shoin Yoshida and Takamori Saigo, and later became the driving force behind the Meiji Restoration.
During the Meiji Restoration, the Mito clan was in the midst of a fierce struggle between the reformist (Tengu party) and conservative (Morosei party) factions, and the Koudoukan War broke out, in which Koudoukan also became a stage.
In the first year of Meiji (1868), the Morosei party, defeated in the Aizu War, returned to Mito and holed up in the Koudokan, where they engaged in a battle across the Ote-mon Gate with the Honkokuji party and the Tengu party, who had entered Mito Castle.
At this time, many buildings, including the Bunkan, the Bukan, and the Igakukan, were destroyed by fire and shelling.
Today, the Mito Koudoukan still retains the atmosphere of the time when it was the domain school, and stepping into the building is like stepping back in time to the end of the Edo period.
