I wrote “I Don’t Have Who to Call” for the nights when something goes wrong and you reach for your phone before remembering there isn't anybody you know how to call. Not because there aren't people in the world. But because somewhere along the way, the people you used to talk to got busy, moved away, drifted apart, or became strangers. I've thought about how strange that kind of loneliness can be. You can have hundreds of names in your phone and still have nobody you feel comfortable calling at two in the morning. Sometimes pride plays a part. Sometimes life does. Sometimes you spend so many years telling everybody you're fine that they eventually believe you. This song is about a man who has spent too long carrying everything by himself. When something finally breaks inside him, he realizes he doesn't know who to reach for anymore. But I don't want this song to end in that darkness. Because I've learned that loneliness can convince you that nobody cares when the truth may simply be that you've stopped giving people a chance to show you that they do. Maybe the first step isn't finding a hundred people. Maybe it's calling one. One old friend. One brother. One daughter. One person you haven't spoken to in too long. And maybe saying the words we men don't always know how to say: “I could use somebody tonight.” If you've ever stared at your phone and realized you didn't know who to call, I hope this song reminds you that being alone right now doesn't mean you have to stay alone.
