The Trojan War made Briseis and Chryseis famous. But Linear B tablets from the Mycenaean palace at Pylos record something far colder: hundreds of women identified not by personal names, but by places such as Miletos, Knidos, Lemnos and Chios, with grain rations tracked alongside their children. This documentary follows the Pylos Linear B “Ab series” — some of the closest surviving administrative evidence for captive or dependent women inside the Mycenaean palace economy. The tablets preserve labor groups, textile work, geographic labels, grain and fig rations, and children counted beside their mothers, while individual identities almost completely disappear from the record. The comparison with Homer raises a disturbing question. The Iliad gives Briseis and Chryseis names, emotional weight and consequences that shape the Trojan War story. The real Mycenaean bureaucracy reduced hundreds of women to locations, occupations and ration totals. Were Homer’s named captive women a literary echo of a much larger historical system? The evidence must be handled carefully: the tablets do not prove that every woman in the Ab series was captured in war. Some may reflect other forms of dependency, labor movement, debt or exchange. What the records do show is a large, institutionalized system in which women and their children could be tracked for years without their individual names being considered administratively necessary. 00:00 Homer Named Two 00:13 The Archive Named None 00:22 Rewind to Pylos 00:51 The Linear B Ab Series 01:43 Hundreds of Women in the Records 02:27 Miletos, Knidos, Lemnos, Chios 03:39 Captives or Enslaved Labor? 06:00 When the Flashback Catches Up 06:32 Briseis and Chryseis vs the Archive 07:54 The Children in the Ration Lists 08:42 What Did Myth Soften? 09:34 The Silence in the Records 10:22 How Far Can the Evidence Go? 11:25 Homer Remembered Two — History Erased Hundreds #trojanwar #LinearB #MycenaeanGreece
