The first key appeared on my porch on a Friday morning in October. I remember the date because it was the same day my daughter called to tell me she wouldn’t be coming home for Thanksgiving. I had been standing barefoot in my kitchen, holding the phone between my shoulder and ear while scraping burned toast into the trash, when she said it. “Mom, don’t make a big thing out of it.” That sentence alone told me it was already a big thing. “I’m not making anything out of anything,” I said. “You’re doing that voice.” “What voice?” “The voice where you pretend you’re fine so I’ll feel guilty.” I closed my eyes. Outside the kitchen window, rain drummed softly against the gutters of the little brick house I had bought after my divorce. Maple leaves had plastered themselves across the backyard like wet paper. “I’m not trying to make you feel guilty, Maya.” “I know. It’s just… Derek’s family already made reservations in Asheville. His grandmother’s getting older. We don’t know how many holidays she has left.” There were a hundred answers I could have given. I could have pointed out that I was getting older too. I could have reminded her that I had spent twenty-three years making Thanksgiving dinner, even the year her father announced two days before Christmas that he was leaving me for a woman from his accounting firm. I could have reminded her that during Maya’s first semester of college, when she called me crying at two in the morning because she thought she’d chosen the wrong major, I drove four hours through freezing rain just to sit on the edge of her dorm bed and tell her she wasn’t failing at life. I said none of that. “All right, honey. Have fun.” Silence. “You sure?” “Of course.” “I love you.” “I love you too.” When the call ended, the kitchen felt larger than it had five minutes earlier. That was when I opened the front door to get the newspaper and saw the key. It was sitting dead center on the welcome mat. Not attached to a note. Not in an envelope. Just a plain brass key with a small white plastic tag looped around the top. On the tag, written in neat blue ink, was one word. FRIDAY. I stared at it for almost a minute. Then I looked left. Then right. My street was quiet. Willow Creek wasn’t the kind of neighborhood where strange things happened. At least, that was what I had told myself when I bought the house three years earlier. The homes were mostly brick ranches and two-story colonials built in the late seventies.
