Last summer, somewhere in the Virginia backcountry between Pearisburg and Daleville, something began following him. It matched his pace. It stopped when he stopped. It circled his tent at night, pulled his stakes while he slept, and left prints in the mud that didn't match any animal on any trail map. By the third night, it knew his name.
