Did Abolishing the Minor Orders Open the Door to Altar Girls?

What happened to the ancient minor orders of the Catholic Church—porter, lector, exorcist and acolyte—and how did their disappearance affect the sanctuary? This sermon begins with the traditional seven stages leading toward the priesthood: porter, lector, exorcist, acolyte, subdeacon, deacon and priest. These offices were understood as ordered toward service at the altar and preparation for Holy Orders. The homily then examines the reforms associated with Paul VI, after which lector and acolyte remained as instituted lay ministries rather than minor orders, while porter, exorcist and the Latin subdiaconate ceased to function in the same way. From there, the preacher considers the growth of female altar servers and Pope Francis’ Spiritus Domini, which changed Canon 230 §1 so instituted ministries of lector and acolyte could be conferred on lay persons rather than only lay men. The sermon argues that these developments represent a rupture with older liturgical tradition and raises broader questions about the relationship between sanctuary service, the diaconate and Holy Orders.
