209. Cone 6 Kiln Opening: Huge Glaze Runs, Refires & a Commission Mug Rescue

Part 2 of this enormous Cone 6 firing brings dramatic refires, beautiful glaze movement and plenty of pottery packed into Blaze. This kiln opening includes mugs, straw cups, oil pourers, Air Pen pottery, Jeanette Gems, mushrooms and some gorgeous new glaze combinations. Blaze, my 160-litre kiln, was so full that this kiln opening had to be divided into three separate videos. I fired this load using my adjusted Cone 6 programme, reaching a top temperature of 1218°C. One of the largest pieces in this section is a commissioned mug made for the lovely Renee Glasgow. The glaze created far more movement than expected and formed a substantial skirt around the base, but the colours themselves are beautiful. I show how I cleaned and refined the base using my grinding equipment. Renee will, of course, have the choice, and I may also make another so that the finished mug is absolutely perfect for her. There are also several refired pieces in this kiln opening, including: • An Air Pen vase given two additional coats of Amaco Blue Rutile • An Ancient Copper mug transformed by a hotter refire and extra Light Flux • River Birch and Olive Float mugs and oil pourers • Spectrum Sunrise, Fuzzy Peach and Mayco Poppy Fields combinations • Amaco Tuscan Blue tested both with and without Stoneware Clear • Autumn Purple and Purple Rain on a refired Air Pen piece • Cosmic Sky mugs using Birch, Cordovan and Cobalt Wash • Ceramic mushrooms decorated with my recycled Janette Gems • Maxine’s gorgeous Cactus combinations with Sunbeam and Soft Aqua • Tall handmade straw cups and smaller dimpled drinking cups There were plenty of glaze runs in this firing, but the Advancer kiln shelves made cleaning the kiln remarkably straightforward. I demonstrate how the GlazeEraser removes the glaze from the shelf and show the finished pottery after using my grinding bat.
