It’s the kind of truth that hurts at first, but eventually frees you. This song is about a past relationship, but it’s also about something much bigger: people who only want you when your life starts to shine. People who didn’t love you when you were trying, learning, building, or breaking, but suddenly want a place in your world now that you’ve grown beyond the version of you they once knew. There’s a line early in the song: “Does it make you miss me now, my tears I dry?” That’s the moment you realise they don’t miss you, they miss the access, the comfort, the idea of what you could be for them. They didn’t respect you when you were still finding your footing, but now that you’ve healed, now that you’re standing tall, they want to cross back over into your life. That’s where the title comes from: “Bridge Over the Tears I Cried.” Because the only thing connecting them to you now is the pain you’ve already moved past. And once that pain is gone, the bridge is gone too.
