Run your eye across the Arkansas Delta and it is flat for as far as you can see — except for one long, narrow spine of high ground that should not be there. It was left behind by two great rivers that once flowed on either side of it, and it stands above the floodplain to this day. Every town of any size in that country sits on top of it.
In this video we follow Crowley’s Ridge across the Delta — how ancient rivers left this strip of high ground standing, why it became the only safe place to build, and how its towns came to line the one ridge in a sea of flat land. Two vanished rivers, one unlikely ridge, a row of towns that owe it everything.
