葉蒨文: Die For Love (愿死也为情) - OST - Legend of the Ching Lady 1985 (吕四娘) - English Translation

Translating the main theme song (片頭曲) "Die For Love" (愿死也为情) from Legend of the Ching Lady 1985 (吕四娘) into English. Original Cantonese Song by Sally Yeh (葉蒨文). The "Legend of the Ching Lady" is a 25 episode drama series released by TVB in 1985. The story is loosely based on the folklore of Lu Siniang who is said to have killed the Yongzheng Emperor during the Ching Dynasty. The story is very popular and has been adapted in numerous TV series and movies alike. In this adaptation, TVB decided that there was no romantic connection between Lu Siniang and the Emperor, instead creating another male lead love interest. This allows the story to have a happy ending. I thought the series was okay but very draggy. I'll leave it at that. The series stars Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲) as Lu Siniang. She looked pretty but also had that interior toughness to make her believable as a top female martial artist. She had great chemistry with both male leads in Simon Yam (任達華) and Austin Wai (惠天賜). I liked Simon Yam's character. It is created based on the good elements of the Emperor in the original story. So he is generally a good guy. I always feel for Austin Wai's character in these adaptations. Because he comes across as a heroic and good guy, but is always spurned by Lu Siniang. Ray Lui (呂良偉) plays the Zhongzheng Emperor. It is a role that suits him well as he does carry a noble air about him. This story feels a little weird for me as he isn't the love interest for Lu Siniang. Instead they created a new character played by Patricia Chong (莊靜而) as the love interest. Whilst Patricia did well, as a created character, it didnn't really have the depth or any character development which made the character one dimensional. The main theme song "Die For Love" is sung by Sally Yeh. Without being unkind to the series, the song is actually the best thing about the series. It was all I could recall about the series since watching it as a kid. Anyway, enjoy... I am willing to take requests to translate other TVB or wuxia songs in the comments section.
