The band is trapped in a loop: reinterpreting, restoring, repeating, paying homage, reconstructing. The banality and stagnation are not due to bad faith, but to something simpler and more devastating: the current band lacks a creative driving force equivalent to the one it had for 40 years. Without Froese, or, in modern times, without Schnauss, and without a visionary composer, the project has become a replica and a tribute. Furthermore, Schnauss’s replacement has contributed virtually nothing to the project’s technological and musical development. There are no new ideas, no new musical languages, and no risk whatsoever. My criticism aims to rouse Quaeschning and Yamane from their artistic lethargy. The third member is irrelevant to this discussion.
