▶神々が集まった地とされる、天空の白い火山・天上山に登ってきました。 東京都心から約180km南に浮かぶ流紋岩質の火山島・神津島。そのシンボルとも言える白亜の火山が天上山です。 神津島には、事代主命（ことしろぬしのみこと）が神々を集め、伊豆七島を創るための相談を行ったという伝説が残されています。さらに、島々が誕生した後には、各島への水の配分を決める「水配り伝説」の舞台が、この天上山だったとも伝えられています。 黒島登山口から一気に十合目まで登り、その先に広がる天上の台地は、まさに天空の楽園。神々が集うという伝説にも思わず納得してしまうような絶景が待っています。 現在の天上山は、平安時代・838年の大噴火によって形成された比較的新しい火山です。人間の時間軸では遥か昔ですが、火山としては若く、そのためシダ植物が多く見られる独特の植生も特徴となっています。 また、天上山は流紋岩からなる火山であるため、一般的な黒い火山とは異なり、山肌は白く輝いています。裏砂漠や表砂漠には白い火山砂が広がり、まるで白いビーチを歩いているかのような幻想的な景観を楽しむことができます。 登山前日は強風で海は大時化。しかし翌日は、まるで何事もなかったかのように穏やかな青い海が広がっていました。青い空、青い海、そして白い火山。そのコントラストは、天上山ならではの美しさです。 「火山って黒いんじゃないの？」 そんなイメージを覆す、美しくも不思議な火山の世界をぜひご覧ください。 ▼ルート ・黒島登山口 ・裏砂漠 ・裏砂漠展望地 ・新東京百景展望地 ・不動池 ・天空の丘 ・天上山山頂 ・表砂漠 ・千代池 ▼撮影日 2025年12月 ▼English Follows ▶ I climbed Mt. Tenjo, the white volcanic mountain in the sky where the gods are said to have gathered. Located about 180 km south of central Tokyo, Kozushima is a volcanic island formed mainly of rhyolite. Rising above the island is Mt. Tenjo, a striking white volcano and one of the island's most iconic landmarks. According to Japanese mythology, the deity Kotoshironushi-no-Mikoto gathered the gods on Kozushima to discuss the creation of the Izu Islands. After the islands were formed, Mt. Tenjo is also said to have been the place where the gods gathered again to decide how water would be distributed among the islands—a legend known as the Water Distribution Legend. Starting from the Kuroshima Trailhead, the climb quickly reaches the summit plateau, revealing breathtaking scenery that truly feels like a paradise above the clouds. The present-day Mt. Tenjo was formed by a major eruption in 838 AD. Although ancient in human history, it is still considered a young volcano in geological terms. This is one reason why the mountain is home to unique vegetation, including many fern species. Unlike the dark volcanic mountains many people imagine, Mt. Tenjo is composed mainly of rhyolite, giving it its distinctive white appearance. The famous Omote-Sabaku and Ura-Sabaku are covered with white volcanic sand, creating a surreal landscape that resembles a white sandy beach high above the sea. The day before the climb, the sea was rough under strong winds. By the next morning, however, everything had changed—clear blue skies, a calm ocean, and a brilliant white volcano standing above it all.
