Gabriele Munter. Artist

While often not included in Art History classes in the U.S., Gabriele Munter was part of The Blue Rider group in Munich and had a strong influence on Kandinsky's work. During World War II, her work was deemed "Degenerate" and she it and also the work of many others including Kandinsky's in her basement. Although her house was searched several times, the work was never found. She, herself, lived upstairs, while Nazis occupied her main house, painting secretly in the night.
