If you drink coffee or tea, heat is lost to the surroundings by means of conduction through the wall of your mug. To
simplify the example, we will assume that the energy loss is constant.
The question is: can we calculate the energy loss Φq ? What are the heat flux on the inside and outside surfaces?
What do we know? Our mug has a height of 10 cm and is completely filled with coffee of 80 °C. The inner radius
is 4 cm and the outer is 4.5 cm. Assume that the heat conductivity coefficient k = 1 W/(m·K) and that the room
temperature is 20 °C.

Kaamil-Inaam Naicker is a skilled petrochemical engineer (chemical / process engineer) working in the Oil and Gas industry in South Africa. He uses his knowledge to make chemical engineering videos on momentum, mass and heat transfer, and Grade 12 Mathematics.
The book Fundamentals of Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer by Welty, Rorrer and Foster is used worldwide by chemical engineering students. These videos are an attempt to help those students.
Please share this video with any classmates who may find it helpful, and subscribe for future helpful solutions. I make these videos free so students do not have to pay for services on other websites.
