The Treeline is an Appalachian folk horror song about the old fear of the woods after dark, and the rules people pass down about what not to do when something waits beyond the firelight.
Stay by the fire. Stay in the light. Don’t cross the treeline after midnight.
If you have a theme or idea you’d like to hear explored, feel free to let me know. No promises, I’m mostly following my curiosity and whims, but I do read them.

[Intro: sparse fingerpicked acoustic guitar, faint wind through pines, distant bowed strings]
(soft, low)
Stay by the fire
Stay in the light
Don't cross the treeline
After midnight
[Verse 1: intimate male vocal, sparse acoustic guitar]
Fog through the branches
Cold on the ground
Keep to the fire
When no one's around
If something calls you
Soft through the night
Don't give an answer
Stay in the light
[Chorus: low and restrained, subtle harmony]
Stay by the fire
Stay in the light
Don't cross the treeline
After midnight
Don't chase the voices
Don't follow the signs
Whatever is waiting
Can wait in the pines
[Verse 2: steady, quiet tension]
If something is crying
Deep in the wood
Don't go and help it
Though you feel you should
If eyes catch the fire
Don't count them twice
Some blink and scatter
Some stare like ice
[Chorus: slightly fuller, restrained harmony]
Stay by the fire
Stay in the light
Don't cross the treeline
After midnight
Don't chase the voices
Don't follow the signs
Whatever is waiting
Can wait in the pines
[Verse 3: quieter, bowed strings underneath]
Fog fills the clearing
White through the black
Something moves with it
Then settles back
If you hear footsteps
Fall in with your own
Don't turn to meet them
You're not alone
[Verse 4: tension building, fire crackle, sparse instrumentation]
If the fire burns low
Don't go for the wood
Burn what you carried
Burn what you could
If nothing is left
And dawn isn't near
Burn what you're wearing
But stay right here
[Bridge: instrumentation drops, nearly spoken]
(low, deliberate)
If someone comes out
And stands by the light
Don't ask where they came from
Don't bid them goodnight
(softer)
And if they should know you
If they know your name
Keep feeding the fire
And don't do the same
[Final Chorus: low group harmony, ominous but restrained]
Stay by the fire
Stay in the light
Don't cross the treeline
After midnight
Don't chase the voices
Don't follow the signs
Whatever was waiting
Is here in the pines
[Outro: instruments thinning to acoustic guitar and wind]
(soft)
I crossed the treeline
One night long ago
[long pause]
(quiet)
Stay by the fire
[near whisper]
That's all you should know
[Outro: acoustic guitar fades, faint wind through pines]
