An monumental, culture-shifting landmark of late-'80s UK Acid House and Proto-Trance that birthed an entire genre and defined the sound of warehouse rave culture. Released in October 1988 as a limited white-label 12" on their own KLF Communications imprint, What Time Is Love? (originally subtitled Pure Trance 1) was conceived in Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty’s "Trancentral" studio. Arriving at the height of the UK's Second Summer of Love, the track stripped away conventional song structures in favor of pure, driving, hypnotic dancefloor utility. Technically, the original 1988 instrumental is a tour de force in minimal electronic arrangements: built around an Oberheim OB-8 synth line (sampling the dramatic minor-key motifs of Jesus Christ Superstar), an iconic Roland TB-303 acid line, and an unrelenting 808 drum machine backbone. Rather than relying on pop vocals, the track relies on crowd chants, sub-bass pressure, and echoing vocal stabs ("Welcome to the Trance...") that built unbearable tension before the breakdown. For vinyl diggers, historians, and electronic music archivists, the original 1988 Pure Trance 12" remains a holy grail—a pristine blueprint documenting the moment acid house crossed into trance, laying the foundation for stadium techno and European rave culture in the decade that followed.
