Reduced power or limp mode does not automatically mean a bad throttle body. On electronic throttle control (drive-by-wire), limp mode is the ECU protecting itself after a plausibility failure: the pedal request, the commanded throttle angle and the two throttle position signals must all agree. This 3D shop-floor walkthrough covers the DC motor driven by an H-bridge, the reduction gears and return spring that parks the blade at a small default opening, the dual TP signals (potentiometer or non-contact Hall, opposing or offset slopes, some newer units SENT digital), and a data-first test: freeze frame, TP1/TP2 against desired throttle, both pedal (APP) signals, and a slow key-on engine-off pedal sweep. Causes include the pedal sensor, wiring and connector, the 5 V reference, carbon at the blade and bore, the motor or the ECU motor driver, and a missed relearn after cleaning or replacement.
DTCs mentioned use generic SAE wording (P2101 throttle actuator control motor circuit range/performance, P2135 TPS A/B correlation, P2111/P2112 stuck open/closed); definitions and enable criteria vary by OEM. Values are typical: confirm the pin-out, specifications and relearn procedure in OEM service information for the VIN. On gasoline engines the throttle meters engine airflow; on diesels an intake throttle is mainly used for EGR control, regeneration and smooth shutdown, so diagnosis differs. Keep fingers out of the bore with the key on: the blade can move.
