EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #66: BURTON PIDSEA The small commuter village of Burton Pidsea stands in the north-western corner of its parish, some 11 miles east of Hull and only a short drive away from the North Sea. Its name is formed of two parts - the common Anglian name Burton, and Pidsea which is a little more complicated. Originally, the personal name Gamel was used as a suffix in the 12th century. Gamel was the name of a local landowner, and that name still lives on thanks to a modern day street. Pidsea has been used since the 13th century and it refers to a former mere which was on the boundary between this parish and neighbouring Roos. The village has occasionally been called Burton St. Peter too. Burton Pidsea used to be a scattered, loosely built settlement, laid out in a diagonal fashion across the parish as recently as the 18th century. These days its much more built up as a result of newer housing estates It’s famed for something called the Stamford Plough, something it displays proudly on a sign at both ends of the village. The most famous names out here are Edward Baxter and Robert Clapham, the latter’s family were major landowners. Edward Baxter was famed for a renowned racehorse called Nancy, bred in Burton Pidsea in the late 1840s. The name Nancy can be found in a couple of places here, including one of the two pubs. As well as the watering holes, there’s a church, a memorial hall, a shop, a primary school and a playing field. It’s got pretty much all you need this one.
