This is an original medieval epic song set at the Council of Clermont, 1095, written and performed in two authentic period languages: Latin and Occitan. This is right after the Battle of Manzikert and the catalyst for the First Crusade. With this, I welcome everyone to the intro song of the historically based music series THE CRUSADES. And I am only able to do this creative work with the help of AI software. The Council of Clermont was the spark. In November 1095, Pope Urban II stood before a crowd in the Auvergne and called for war to reclaim Jerusalem. No one in that field knew they were about to set two centuries of history in motion. This song tries to capture that single moment, before the armies marched, before the walls of Antioch and Jerusalem fell, when it was still just a sermon and a crowd deciding whether to answer it. Two languages carry through the song. Latin was the tongue of the Church, the clergy and the official record of the Council, the language of Urban's authority. Occitan was the everyday tongue of Clermont and the Auvergne, the language of the ordinary people who stood in that field and heard the call in a tongue they actually spoke. The instruments are kept period accurate throughout with a modernized mix. Just the sounds that existed in that world, some real audio and some AI. The moment both languages meet, Latin and Occitan crying out together, is the centrepiece of the piece. Deus vult. One sermon. One field. One answer.
