The Cabanatuan prison raid required 120 US Army Rangers to cross open terrain in complete darkness to save 500 men from execution.
This mission in the Philippines was a desperate race against time. With the Japanese clearing all natural cover around the camp, the raiding force had to rely on precise intelligence and the support of local Filipino guerrillas to reach the prisoners undetected. We break down the logistical challenges of this operation and how the unit managed to execute a rescue that many deemed impossible.
Beyond the Rangers, the success of the mission depended on the Alamo Scouts, who provided critical reconnaissance, and the unconventional tactics used to distract the guards. By examining the tactical records of the Pacific War, we analyze the risks taken to liberate these survivors of the Bataan Death March before their captors could carry out mass executions.
