Akhila, a second-year B.Sc. Nursing student, asked Dr. Abhishek Shukla (Geriatrician), “Sir, many patients ask me how they can avoid the bad smell from sweat. Sweating and body odor are very common problems. Socially, it often becomes embarrassing — like when someone removes their shoes in a bus and everyone starts teasing because of the smell. How can we deal with such situations?”
Dr. Abhishek Shukla explained that sweat itself is actually odorless. The real problem begins because of two important factors: moisture and bacteria. When sweat comes out and dries quickly, it does not create a problem. But when sweat remains trapped on the skin, it creates a moist environment where bacteria can grow. These bacteria feed on proteins and fats present on the skin and produce waste products, which cause the foul smell.
So the main goal is simple: allow sweat to evaporate and prevent excessive bacterial growth.
To do this, he suggested a few important steps:
First, maintain daily hygiene. Wash the body every day with antibacterial soap, especially areas where sweat collects such as the armpits and groin.
Second, use antiperspirants. These contain aluminum-based compounds that temporarily block sweat glands and reduce sweating. Less sweat means less moisture, which makes it harder for bacteria to grow.
Third, wear breathable clothes. Cotton clothes are better because they allow air circulation and help sweat dry quickly. Synthetic clothes like polyester trap moisture and encourage bacterial growth.
Fourth, keep body hair trimmed. Excess hair in areas like the armpits can trap sweat, making it easier for bacteria to multiply.
Dr. Shukla concluded, “If we explain these small but effective steps to patients, they can easily control sweat odor and feel more confident in social situations.”
