Deep in an autumn birch forest, a builder constructs a heated 10x12 off-grid log cabin workshop from fallen timber, salvaged scraps, and just $125 in materials. Racing the approaching winter freeze, he harvests and peels every trunk by hand on the forest floor.
After leveling the base logs on fieldstones, he stacks ten courses using the butt-and-pass method, pinning joints with ten-inch spikes while chainsaw-kerfing and hewing crooked aspen trunks into tight seams. Once the 18-foot ridge beam and salvaged rafters are set, he plunge-cuts the solid walls to fit a reclaimed plank door and a free glass window, sealing the shell with woodland moss chinking and heavy tarps.
As early snow falls, he fabricates a custom metal roof jack and fires up a cast-iron wood stove, driving the interior past 73°F to complete a warm wilderness workshop.
