Both differ in their approach to Islamic values. Muhammadiyah is known for its concept of purifying Islam and its pioneering efforts in education. NU, on the other hand, is more lenient and tolerant of Indonesian traditions. Historically, Muhammadiyah and NU have been closely connected. Despite their differing ideologies, KH Ahmad Dahlan and KH Hasyim Asy'ari have been close friends since their teenage years. These two Muslim scholars in Indonesia have been friends since they both studied with Kiai Saleh Darat from Semarang. Imron writes that at the time, Dahlan was 16 years old, while Hasyim was 14. Kiai Hasyim calls Kiai Dahlan "Mas" (older brother), while Kiai Dahlan calls Kiai Hasyim "Adi" (younger brother).
