I Explored the Cars Game 20 Years Late

I played the 2006 Cars video game for the first time — the open-world one set in Radiator Springs — twenty years after everybody else did. No childhood memories of this game, no favorite missions. Just Lightning McQueen, a movie world I only knew from watching it, and the question of whether a twenty-year-old movie tie-in game is actually worth driving around in. Turns out the racing wasn't the part that won me over. Hunting postcards gave me a reason to stop heading for the next race and actually look around. Tractor tipping is in here as a real playable thing, which is exactly what I wanted from a Cars game. And the story keeps going after the movie ends, which I did not know before I started. Then the races stopped being free wins, and the last one of the session came down to the final stretch.
