@bluehoundsjazz 🎷 *BLUE HOUNDS JAZZ PRESENTS: 1920s HARLEM AFTER DARK*
Step into the smoky streets of Harlem in the Roaring Twenties.
Imagine New York after midnight: the glow of neon signs, the sound of a piano drifting through an open doorway, the clatter of footsteps on Seventh Avenue, and the unmistakable rhythm of jazz coming from somewhere down the block.
This collection is inspired by the vibrant musical world of **1920s Harlem**, during the Harlem Renaissance and the era of Prohibition.
🎹 A LITTLE HISTORY: HARLEM IN THE JAZZ AGE
During the 1920s, Harlem became one of the most important cultural centers of African American life in the United States. The Harlem Renaissance brought together musicians, writers, poets, painters and performers, creating an extraordinary cultural movement.
Lenox Avenue, Seventh Avenue and 135th Street became landmarks of a thriving nightlife. Jazz clubs, cabarets, rent parties and underground speakeasies filled the neighborhood with music and energy.
Pianists such as James P. Johnson and Fats Waller helped shape the Harlem Stride piano tradition, while ragtime, blues and early jazz became the soundtrack of the era.
The Cotton Club, Small's Paradise and the Savoy Ballroom became legendary Harlem venues. Their histories were different: the Cotton Club excluded Black customers despite featuring Black performers, while the Savoy welcomed an interracial clientele.
During Prohibition (1920–1933), secret drinking establishments and private parties added another dimension to New York's nightlife.
This was a world of musical innovation, extraordinary performers and unforgettable nights.
🎶 THE SOUND
Inspired by the spirit of the era, this collection travels through vintage jazz, ragtime piano, barrelhouse blues, stride influences and smoky late-night club atmospheres.
From a quiet Sunday morning in Harlem to the last piano playing in a hidden speakeasy, every track paints a different scene.
**22 original musical pieces and variations**, each with its own character and atmosphere.
