Deep in the oldest forest beyond Embervale, there was a house that appeared only to people who had stopped looking for it.
At least, that was what the villagers said.
They told stories about travelers who followed the northern path beneath enormous moss-covered trees and eventually found themselves standing before a little stone house surrounded by ferns, mushrooms and roots older than the kingdom itself. Others walked the same path for hours and found nothing but trees.
The wizard who lived there had never bothered correcting either version.
He had lived in the forest longer than most people in Embervale could remember. Long enough for saplings to become trees, for paths to disappear beneath moss and for several generations of villagers to disagree about precisely how old he was.
He preferred that particular question unanswered.
His refuge stood beside a narrow stream where the forest grew especially dense. Books occupied nearly every dry surface inside. Bundles of herbs hung from the rafters. An enormous wooden table remained permanently covered in half-finished notes, maps and cups of tea that the wizard routinely forgot he had made.
Outside, however, everything was remarkably orderly.
There was a bench beneath an ancient oak.
And beside it, another.
The second bench was for visitors.
They came occasionally.
A farmer once arrived after losing an entire harvest to an early frost. A young woman came the night before she was supposed to leave Embervale for the first time. Years later, a soldier found the house after returning from a war he refused to discuss.
The wizard offered each of them the same thing.
Tea.
Not prophecy. Not wisdom. Not even particularly good advice.
Just tea.
If they wished to speak, he listened. If they preferred silence, he seemed equally satisfied. The forest usually did enough talking for both of them.
Leaves whispered high above the refuge. Water moved over smooth stones in the stream. Somewhere among the branches, birds called to one another while sunlight shifted slowly across the moss.
Most visitors eventually discovered that silence became easier after a while.
That afternoon, the wizard was alone.
He sat outside with an open book resting across his knees, although he had been reading the same page for nearly half an hour. Sunlight filtered through the enormous trees in scattered golden beams, catching tiny particles drifting through the air.
There were things he could have been doing.
Several letters from Embervale waited unanswered. A shelf inside desperately needed repairing. Something had been stealing berries from his garden for three consecutive nights, and the wizard had developed strong suspicions regarding a particularly shameless family of squirrels.
None of these problems seemed urgent.
So he closed the book.
For many years, he had believed rest was something that came after the important things were finished.
Experience had eventually taught him the flaw in that arrangement.
Important things were never finished.
There would always be another letter, another task, another person requiring an answer before sunset. The world possessed a remarkable talent for inventing reasons not to stop.
The forest was considerably less demanding.
It required nothing from him except that he occasionally remember not to step on the mushrooms.
The wizard leaned back against the old bench and listened.
The stream continued toward Embervale.
Branches moved gently overhead.
Somewhere deeper in the forest, a squirrel was almost certainly committing a crime.
The wizard smiled without opening his eyes.
Perhaps someone would find the refuge tomorrow.
Perhaps nobody would.
Either way, the kettle would be ready.
And for the remainder of the afternoon, the ancient forest could keep the rest of the world outside.
