Amboy Crater’s Deadly Hike

Who in their right mind would go hiking at Amboy Crater at the start of summer. I would; that’s who! Make no mistake about it. This is not an Amboy Crater myth. This hike can kill you. Having read my previous statement might lead you to ask, “Why will this hike kill me? Is Amboy Crater active?” No, Amboy Crater is not active, but it is a dangerous hike. There have been multiple Amboy Crater deaths. The conditions here can be so harsh, that there are signs everywhere that state that hiking is not recommended at Amboy Crater. Having said that, the trail is beautiful so who wouldn’t want to hike this deadly trail? Amboy Crater is truly an amazing place for hiking and a cool place to visit. If you are in California, coming here is a must. I personally would recommend that you hike this trail in the winter time, but if you insist on hiking during the summer months, make sure you check Amboy Crater weather. Temperatures here can easily climb to over 100 degrees. I made this hike during the height of the Corona virus outbreak. I was hesitant to go because I couldn’t find the answer to my question online. My question was, “Is Amboy Crater open?” The answer was, yes. It’s not like a state park. It’s a natural landmark. There was no ranger station or anyone patrolling the area. It’s just out there for all to visit. There is literally nothing out there for miles around so make sure you have plenty of water because if you find yourself dehydrated out there, you won’t find any help anytime soon. The scenery is beautiful at Amboy Crater. The day I went, the wildflowers were in bloom. And I haven’t been there at night, but would imagine that Amboy Crater stargazing would be amazing. I didn’t realize it while I was there but when I got back, I learned that there is much more to see than just Amboy Crater. There’s the town of Amboy which is essentially a Ghost town which is fun to explore. There are also Amboy Crater lava tubes. You will think you are in a different world when you see the sun piercing thru openings in the lava tubes. Join me as I visit this amazing dormant volcano.
