Welcome to The Reading Lab!
In this lesson, we’re learning about one of the most common vowel sounds in the English language: the schwa.
You may have seen the symbol /ə/ in a dictionary pronunciation and wondered what it means. Although the symbol may look unusual, the sound it represents is something we use all the time when we speak.
In this video, we’ll explore:
What the schwa /ə/ is
How schwa relates to syllables and word stress
Why schwa often occurs in an unstressed syllable
How different vowel letters can represent the schwa sound
How to recognize schwa in a dictionary pronunciation
Examples of schwa in familiar words
The important thing to remember is that schwa is a sound, not a letter. Different vowel letters can represent this relaxed, reduced vowel sound depending on how a word is pronounced.
This lesson builds on our previous Reading Lab lessons about syllables, word stress, and the pronunciation key. Understanding schwa gives us one more tool for figuring out how unfamiliar words are pronounced.
Next, we’ll move beyond how a word sounds and begin looking at how a word functions in language:
What are the parts of speech?
