Most people approaching ayahuasca for the first time don't know this — and it's why so many first experiences end in overwhelm, or worse, trauma. Boris, Lead Facilitator at APL Journeys Center with 15 years of personal experience and 8 years of professional facilitation (2,000+ ceremonies, psychology degree), shares the three most common ayahuasca mistakes he sees — and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Believing a bigger dose will solve everything. The results of an ayahuasca ceremony do not depend on quantity. At APL retreats, every participant is individually screened before the first ceremony, because sensitivity varies enormously from person to person. An experienced man taking a below-average dose can have a profoundly intense experience. A woman with no prior experience taking a larger dose may feel nothing. Without a gradual, calibrated approach, you risk an experience that overwhelms your system rather than heals it.
Mistake #2: Trying to go deep before developing trust. When participants force themselves into high-intensity experiences while their mind is tense and body is locked — without trusting the space, the medicine, or the maestro leading them — the result is commonly traumatic, not transformative.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the gradual approach. The first night is not about a life-changing experience. It is about exploring your sensitivity, ensuring you feel safe, and building a relationship with the medicine. Ayahuasca does not create tolerance — the same dose on night 4 of a 4-ceremony programme can be profoundly more intense than on night 1. This is why APL only runs programmes with a minimum of three-four ayahuasca experiences.
Boris also explains the Shipibo understanding of why the icaros (healing songs) sung by the maestro are as important as the dose itself — and why a skilled Shipibo Onanya's presence determines your experience more than quantity ever could.
