Kalama Sub-County, has metamorphic rocks which form the roots of these mountains. Kalama is a subcounty in Machakos County, Kenya, covering an area of approximately 487.2 square kilometers. The region features a semi-arid climate with hilly terrain, situated at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 2,100 meters above sea level. The local economy primarily relies on subsistence agriculture, with residents cultivating drought-resistant crops such as sorghum and millet to adapt to the semi-arid conditions. As of the 2019 census (most recent), Kalama had a population of 54,462, resulting in a population density of about 111.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The subcounty is characterized by its metamorphic rock formations, which contribute to the area's unique geological landscape.
