Why are many young people today hesitant to get married? Has marriage lost its appeal, or have the expectations, pressures, and realities surrounding marriage changed?
Marriage has traditionally been viewed as an important milestone in life. Yet today, many young people are questioning whether marriage is for them. Some fear divorce and unhappy relationships. Others worry about financial pressures, infidelity, loss of freedom, family expectations, or the responsibilities that come with building a home.
In this discussion, we explore the question:
*“Lwaki abantu tebaagala bufumbo ennaku zino?” — Why are young people no longer interested in marriage?*
We examine some of the possible reasons behind this shift, including:
*Economic pressures:* The rising cost of living, housing, weddings, and raising children.
*Fear of divorce:* Seeing marriages break down among parents, relatives, friends, and public figures.
*Changing attitudes:* The growing emphasis on personal freedom, independence, and individual fulfilment.
*Distrust between men and women:* Concerns about faithfulness, commitment, expectations, and the intentions of potential partners.
*Unrealistic expectations:* The influence of social media and idealised portrayals of relationships.
*Negative experiences:* Childhood exposure to conflict, abuse, neglect, or unhealthy relationships.
*Marriage versus cohabitation:* Whether people still see marriage as necessary for a committed relationship.
*The role of culture, family, and faith:* How traditional expectations and religious beliefs shape decisions about marriage.
Are young people rejecting marriage itself, or are they rejecting the way marriage is presented and practised today? What would make marriage a more attractive, meaningful, and sustainable commitment?
This conversation invites honest reflection rather than blame. The goal is to understand the concerns facing young people, challenge assumptions, and consider what healthy commitment and lasting relationships require.
