Business Environment refers to the sum total of all external forces, factors and institutions which affect the performance of a business enterprise.
These external forces exist outside the business organisation, but they can have a significant impact on its decisions, working, growth and profitability.
Examples of Business Environment include:
• Economic conditions
• Social conditions
• Political factors
• Technological changes
• Legal regulations
• Competition
• Changes in customer preferences
A business cannot completely control these external factors, but it needs to understand and respond to them effectively.
2. Features of Business Environment
The important features of Business Environment are:
• Totality of External Forces – Business Environment consists of all external forces and factors that influence a business enterprise.
• Specific and General Forces – It includes specific forces such as customers, suppliers, competitors and investors, as well as general forces such as economic, social, political, technological and legal factors.
• Inter-relatedness – Different factors of the business environment are closely related to one another. A change in one factor may affect other factors as well.
• Dynamic Nature – Business Environment keeps changing continuously due to changes in technology, customer preferences, government policies, economic conditions and other factors.
• Uncertainty – Future changes in the business environment cannot always be predicted accurately.
• Complexity – Business Environment consists of many different factors, making it difficult for a business to understand and analyse all of them at the same time.
• Relativity – Business Environment differs from country to country and even from one region to another.
