Can a movie about the power of art leave you feeling powerless?
Digger is one of the most ambitious and beautifully constructed films I’ve seen this year. Iñárritu, Lubezki, and Tom Cruise are operating at an extraordinary level—but somehow, the experience left me exhausted rather than moved.
In this review, I look at what Digger is really trying to say about art, storytelling, catastrophe, and the stories we tell ourselves—and why I ultimately found myself asking whether art can do more than simply give us a moment of catharsis.
I also compare Digger to Hamnet, a film that made me feel the power of art in a way Digger didn't.
