After months of complaints from owners wondering why their new vehicles were taking on water, GM is instructing dealers to inspect and repair certain 2024 and 2025 Chevy Equinox EV models. The problem stems from two potential sources. According to Service Update N252528650, which applies to any affected vehicle in their inventory, the leak can occur if the HVAC drain tube becomes disconnected from the bulkhead. Alternatively, water may intrude through gaps in the body seam sealer under the carpet. The repair procedure requires technicians to pull back the carpet, inspect the drain tube and seams, and reseal any gaps. If the carpet is wet, dealers must dry it thoroughly to prevent musty odors, a condition covered in a related technical bulletin. This official action follows a long period of uncertainty for owners. As GM Authority noted back in October 2025, online forums lit up with complaints about sloshing sounds and soaked carpets. Dealers were left scrambling for answers, often relying on preliminary information from technical service bulletins. The delay in issuing a formal service update left many early adopters frustrated. The fix itself is labor-intensive. For passenger-side leaks, technicians must remove trim panels, the door sill, and the Brake Electronic Control Module (BECM) bracket to access the area. They then inspect the body seam from both inside the cabin and underneath the vehicle, applying water to confirm the leak before sealing it with compound. While GM states there are “no parts required” for the repair, dealers may charge the cost of seam sealer, up to $19.99, back to GM. Importantly, GM designed this campaign to avoid inconveniencing current owners with a special trip. Dealers will only perform the inspection and repair when the vehicle returns for regularly scheduled maintenance. However, any unsold Chevy Equinox EV sitting on dealer lots must be fixed immediately before delivery. With this update, GM aims to finally dry up the complaints and ensure the Equinox EV keeps its occupants – and its carpets – dry.
