Described by Jacques-Yves Cousteau as "the aquarium of the world" the Sea of Cortez in Mexico is distinguished by its incredibily diverse array of marine life. In 1940 the famous American writer John Steinbeck spent 6 weeks on a boat and wrote a book about it: the Log from the Sea of Cortez. Due in large part to its unique climate and geographic features, the Sea of Cortez harbors a rich marine ecosystem as diverse and spectacular as any on Earth. Its placid and protected waters harbor thousands of fish and mammal species, as well as some 5,000 species of micro-invertebrates. On this trip I saw humpback whales, a pod of orca's, mako and bull sharks, mobulas, thousands of jacks and several colonies of sea lions.
Unfortunately, this uniquely rich marine life is threatened by overfishing.
