We flew into Ramona Airport (KRNM) for a fall day trip to Julian, one of Southern California’s best-known mountain towns.
Once we had the rental car, we headed into town for breakfast and apple pie, toured the Eagle Mine, wandered through downtown, visited Julian Farm & Orchard and continued our very unofficial search for our favorite Julian apple pie.
In this video, we’re sharing what it’s like flying into Ramona, how we made the trip from the airport to Julian work smoothly and why this ended up feeling like one of the ultimate Southern California fall day trips.

TRANSIENT PARKING
Transient parking is located at the base of tower and fees are $5/night for single engine.
FBO
There are two FBOs on the field at Ramona Airport: Pacific Executive Aviation and Chuck Hall Aviation.
Both offer full-service 100LL and Jet A, along with basic pilot and passenger services. On this trip, we used Pacific Executive Aviation. The staff was friendly and the FBO had the basic amenities we needed for a quick day trip.
We were also able to have our rental car dropped off and picked up directly at Pacific Executive, which made the transition from airplane to Julian really easy.
Neither FBO currently offers a crew car, so if you plan to leave the airport, you’ll need to arrange a rental car, rideshare or taxi.
FUEL
Full-service 100LL and Jet A are available through both Pacific Executive Aviation and Chuck Hall Aviation.
Self-service 100LL is also available on the northeast side of the field, adjacent to Pacific Executive Aviation.
RESTROOMS
Restrooms are available through the FBO facilities.
RENTAL CARS / RIDESHARE
There are no crew cars available at either FBO.
Rental cars can be arranged in advance and delivered to the airport. For this trip, we had our rental car dropped off and picked up at Pacific Executive Aviation.
Rideshare and taxi service are also options but if Julian is your destination, we’d recommend reserving a rental car ahead of time. The drive from Ramona Airport to Julian is roughly 30 minutes, and having the car waiting for us made the whole day much easier.
JULIAN
Julian is a historic mountain town rooted in California’s gold-rush era and later became known for its apple orchards and apple pie.
Downtown is compact and easy to explore on foot, with historic storefronts, small shops, restaurants and bakeries along Main Street. We left some time open to wander, which ended up being one of the easiest and most enjoyable parts of the day.
WHY FLY HERE
Ramona Airport gives GA pilots convenient access to both Ramona and San Diego’s mountain communities, including Julian.
If Julian is your destination, arranging a rental car ahead of time turns KRNM into a very practical jumping-off point for a day built around historic downtown, gold-mining history, orchards and a lot of apple pie.
