Irish Sea Shanty: Grace O'Malley - Queen of the Sea

Sea Queen of Ireland and chieftain of the O'Malley clan, Grace O'Malley (Gráinne Mhaol) was the indomitable spirit of the Atlantic. A woman who commanded fleets, defied empires, and met queens as an equal, her name remains carved in the salt and stone of the Irish coast. -------- Lyrics: We old salts sing of a Queen (Of a Queen!) Fierce as the wild western wind The proud head of all her fleet The mistress of the stormy sea Dad wanted a fair lady Instead he got a salty baby For she grew with timber and sails Salt water running in her veins Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Let this song fill every galley Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Under her flag we all rally She ruled the sea with iron fist Her fleet sailed like the morrow mist If you saw them among the spray You'd better stop and start to pray For in her sea she demanded toll Your choice to pay in blood or gold Don't even think to keep her due Yer don't want her wrath upon you Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Let this song fill every galley Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Under her flag we all rally She made men bow but she never did Nor for lordlings nor for the queen She met her once, I'll have you know At the English court, in Greenwich hall She was there to get her lads back The queen of the sea, the queen of the land A battle of words, a battle of wits Even in that she defeated the Brits Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Let this song fill every galley Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Under her flag we all rally We're now orphans of the queen 'Cause old Grace is no more But her name we still sing Through each bay and through each shore In each storm being made You can still hear her name She now lives in the wind Old Grace, of the sea the queen Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Let this song fill every galley Oh we sing of Grace O'Malley Under her flag we all rally To Grace! --------- If the story of the Pirate Queen inspired you, join the Phalanx.
