A disguise can change what people see.
But can it survive human contact?
The Shōninki, compiled in 1681, preserves a list of social roles a shinobi could assume.
Monk.
Merchant.
Religious traveler.
Performer.
Ordinary person.
But the most important detail is not the clothing.
Several of these roles are useful because they allow the operative to approach people.
That means the disguise is only the beginning.
Once someone gets close enough to speak, observe and interact, the role has to remain believable.
In this episode, SHINOBI — THE INVISIBLE WAR investigates:
• the seven social forms preserved in the Shōninki;
• why proximity mattered;
• why appearance alone was not enough;
• how behavior and role knowledge could affect concealment;
• what the Bansenshūkai adds to the problem;
• and what these early-Edo manuals can — and cannot — prove about earlier Sengoku practice.
No invented passwords.
No fictional interrogations.
No universal ninja disguise system.
Only what the documents can support.
