In Part 1 of this special Feature Friday conversation, Malik Adams, Russell Brooks and Jude Clyke reflect on the families, neighbourhoods and African Nova Scotian communities that shaped who they are today. Malik shares how his North End Halifax upbringing and the educators who invested in him inspired a 27-year career in public education. Russell discusses his work addressing anti-Black racism and reducing the barriers faced by members of his community. Jude reflects on growing up in Truro’s Island community and his work supporting Black individuals within Canada’s correctional system. Together, they explore the impact of social media on young people, why technology should be a tool rather than a substitute for life, the difference representation makes in education and the responsibility to leave the next generation in a stronger position. It’s an honest, insightful and often hilarious conversation about identity, mentorship, anxiety, belonging and the irreplaceable value of human connection.
