About the Raag: Raag Jaijaivanti is a rich, sampurna (heptatonic) raag admired for its depth, complexity, and stately grace. It is distinguished by its use of both Gandhars and both Nishads, with the komal (flat) Ga appearing in characteristic descending phrases alongside the shuddha Ga, a subtle interplay that gives the raag its unmistakable emotional colour. This delicate weaving of notes lends Jaijaivanti a mature, contemplative character that unfolds gradually with each phrase. Traditionally performed during the late night hours, Raag Jaijaivanti evokes feelings of serenity, devotion, and quiet introspection. Its expansive melodic canvas allows for elaborate exposition, making it a favourite for deep, meditative renderings in the khayal tradition, while its tender phrases also grace the world of thumri and bhajan.
