In this video we explain the following
Structure of Immunoglobulins
The basic immunoglobulin unit (monomer) consists of 4 polypeptide chains
Two identical heavy chains and two identical light chains held together by disulphide bonds
Both light and heavy chains consist of subunits or domains. Each domain consists of 110 amino acids held together in a single loop by an intra-chain disulphide bond
Structural Features of Antibody Variable Regions
The variable regions of both the light and heavy chain are responsible for antigen-binding, because the core structural unit of each antibody molecule contains two heavy chains and two light chains, every antibody molecule has at least two antigen-binding sites.
Structural Features of Antibody Constant Regions
The constant region of the heavy chain is responsible for various biologic functions, e.g., complement activation and binding to cell surface receptors. The complement binding site is in the CH2 domain.
