What does faithful leadership require as artificial intelligence reshapes how we work, learn, create, and make decisions? Join Leaders in the Arena for a conversation with Dr. Andrew Yuengert, Professor of Economics at Pepperdine University, and Dr. Michael Rhodes, Dean of Faculty and Lecturer in Old Testament at Carey Baptist College, guest hosted by Dr. Lance Wescher of Covenant College.
Drawing from economics, theology, Scripture, and Christian social thought, the conversation explores human dignity, work, wisdom, and flourishing in the age of AI. The guests also reflect on themes raised in Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical on artificial intelligence, including the need to protect the human person, resist reducing people to tools of technology, and approach AI as a moral—not merely technical—question.
Three key discussion themes:
What Makes Us Human in an Age of AI? — How should a biblical understanding of human dignity, vocation, creativity, relationships, and the imago Dei shape the way Christians think about AI?
Efficiency vs. Wisdom — AI can help us do more, faster—but should everything that can be optimized be optimized? How do virtue, prudence, judgment, and moral responsibility remain central to good leadership? Yuengert’s scholarship is particularly relevant here: his work explicitly connects economics with practical wisdom and the virtues.
AI, Work, and Human Flourishing — As AI changes the nature of work and decision-making, how can Christian leaders use technology in ways that strengthen rather than diminish people, communities, and meaningful vocation? Rhodes’ work on economic discipleship, moral formation, Scripture, and public theology gives this part of the conversation a strong biblical foundation.
